GIVING BACK

Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Franchisees all over the United States prove that giving back to the community sure goes a long way.

Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Stores have always contributed to the communities in which they belong. From seminars to sponsorships to encouraging people to lead healthier lives, our franchisees and their teams of employees have been true ambassadors while representing the Max Muscle Sports Nutrition organization. They have consciously chosen to be “a part” of their communities, rather than “apart” from them. In this month’s issue, we pay tribute to our franchisees who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in their communities, one store at a time.

Fernando Salas
Franchisee, MMSN Wesley Chapel, Florida
Fitness and Nutrition Education

As the owner of the Max Muscle Sports Nutrition in Wesley Chapel, Florida, Fernando Salas has been involved with community outreach projects long before he became a franchisee. He and his team teach free nutrition classes and provide free nutritional consultations at local gyms, high schools, and community events.

“Being able to educate the community is a plus for our team,” Fernando says. “It’s our job to educate on healthy choices rather than a quick fix, that way it becomes a lifestyle change not a quick solution.”

Fernando’s store was awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation from the principal of Wesley Chapel High School for his nutritional seminar during the school’s “Great American Teach-In Day.” Other schools have invited Fernando to give presentations on their campuses as well. Adds Fernando confidently, “We have earned the title of being the local ‘Authority of Sports Nutrition.’”

Scott Herkes
Franchisee, MMSN Bettendorf, Iowa
Local Law Enforcement Challenge

“All of our community outreach programs are specifically focused on education, not supplement sales,” says Scott Herkes, franchisee of Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Bettendorf. “When we opened our store, my wife Karen and I realized the importance of marketing to the community and reaching out.”

The Supreme Challenge is an annual event that Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Bettendorf co-sponsors with QC Acceleration, a local training center specializing in physical speed and power development. The program challenges local area fire and police personnel to get in better shape. “It’s a friendly competition between departments and is designed to give people a specific goal to focus on,” says Scott. The event tests: 40-yard dash, vertical leap, bench press, leg press, super treadmill endurance and agility with trophies awarded to top finishers. The challenge was developed to help get fire and police departments in better shape.

Joey and Kari Boyens
Franchisees, MMSN Des Moines, Iowa
Gastric Bypass Support Group

Nearly one-third of the adult population in the U.S. was clinically obese in 2000 and in 2008 alone, weight loss surgery statistics claim that more than 100,000 people have undergone Gastric Bypass surgery.

Joey and Kari Boyens, owners of Max Muscle Sports Nutrition in Des Moines have teamed up with their local physicians and Gastric Bypass support groups to provide protein for those who have undergone surgery. Says Joey, “All patients who have Gastric Bypass surgery must take protein after their procedures. Knowing this, we contacted local physicians to tell them about our protein products.” Joey and Kari set up a sampling event at a support group meeting that was met with great success. The husband-wife team was invited back to all support group meetings after the first one.

“Many of the Gastric Bypass support group members have never tasted protein and they appreciate being able to sample before buying. They also appreciate that we come to them,” Joey says.

Larry and his team’s outreach projects are extensive and include health fairs, high school nutrition clinics, sponsorships, event trailer appearances, a 3-day rodeo event and sponsorship of a soccer tournament. He and his business partner, Dominic Current, choose to take part in a variety of community activities to reach out to a broad array of people and ages. With four stores to oversee, this team is all about making their presence known. “Brand awareness is our No. 1 reason for doing any event,” he says.

Their outreach efforts have also allowed customers to become life-long friends. Summed up by Larry, “There is no greater good than helping people to make their lives better.”

Heather Johnson
Franchisee, MMSN Layton, Utah
Empowering Women; Sponsor of Local Girls’ Soccer Team

Heather Johnson owns the Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store in Layton, Utah. She and her staff share the belief that a healthier, fitter community benefits everyone. “When you’re performing at your best, you’re a better person,” she says. “All of us have a responsibility to help our communities.”

Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Layton focuses its general outreach on everyone in the community, but Heather and her team have a special interest in focusing on females. “I have a passion for helping women understand their ‘healthiest fittest’ self is very empowering,” she says.

The store’s focus on women prompted Heather and her team to sponsor a local girls soccer team whose participants are between the ages of 12 and 14 as a way to encourage them to be their best and fittest.

Jennifer Lee
Franchisee, MMSN Las Vegas, Nevada
Max Muscle’s Marathon Tune-Up

Jennifer Lee is the owner of Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Las Vegas and on November 14, 2009, her store sponsored the first ever “Max Muscle’s Marathon Tune-Up 10K & 5K” race in partnership and support of the Las Vegas Track Club. The event was a success with 150 people signing up to run in the races.

Says Jennifer, “Everyone had a great time and got in some exercise. Many of the participants were already serious runners and for some, the race helped to get them started running.” Jennifer said they also raised money and toys for the Southern Nevada Burn Foundation while Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Director of Product Development, Dr. Phil Harvey, and 3rd place MaxFormation winner, Deb Prosser, helped motivate many customers in attendance during an educational weight-loss presentation.

The “Max Muscle Marathon Tune-Up” will become an annual event in Las Vegas with the next race scheduled for November 6, 2010.

Bryan Cash
Franchisee, MMSN Highlands Ranch; Lone Tree, Colorado
Customized Agreements

Bryan Cash opened his store in March 2009 and wasted no time in reaching out to his community. Within the first three months of operation, his store was already sponsoring a series of local running races, top NPC national figure competitor, Jaime Mead, and providing nutritional support for “The Ultimate Fighter” TV star, Brendan Schaub.

Bryan and his team focus on their relationships with people in their area, who want to improve themselves through proper nutrition and exercise. Those who are serious about reaching their goals can commit themselves to an individualized agreement designed specifically for them. Bryan explains, “All agreements include meal planning, body composition measurements, supplement discounts, one-on-one goal sessions and more. I customize the agreement to meet their needs so they receive a package that works for them.” The agreements have worked especially well for athletic organizations from the high school to college to professional level.

Billy and Ali Van Heusen
Franchisees, MMSN Denver, Colorado
Mile High Down Syndrome Association

The Mile High Down Syndrome Association is significant to Billy and Ali Van Heusen, franchisees of the Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Denver store in Colorado. “We chose the MHDSA because our daughter, Mila, born March 2, 2009, has Down Syndrome and they were an amazing source of support, information, comfort and friendship,” shares Ali. Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Denver has been directly involved with multiple fundraising efforts to the Mile High Down Syndrome Association, including sponsoring a team for the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk (Mila’s Max Muscle Walkers) and a sales event where 10 percent of total sales went to MHDSA. “In 2009, we were able to donate more than $6,000 to the organization. This benefits the community by raising aware-ness about people who have Down Syndrome,” says Ali.

The Van Heusens are grateful for the support they’ve received from the Denver community for their outreach efforts and for their store. Says Ali, “Consumers have many places to choose from when it comes to buying supplements. They choose to spend their money at Max Muscle Sports Nutrition Denver not only because of our quality products and superior in-store experience, but because we choose to give back to the community in which we all live.” MS&F
